swathi muthyam – telugu

Swathi Muthyam (Telugu) also dubbed as Sippikkul Mutham in Tamil.

I absolutely have no recollection of where and when I saw this movie. Did I watch it in telugu or tamil, back in Andhra during vacations or at home in Madras on the VCR? Yet, I do know that I remember most of it. Especially the songs, a few dialogs and expressions.

Interestingly music’s always stuck with me. I would sing along with tunes I hear on the radio, street corners or any random place. Very many do it. The only difference being I never really got to listen to music of any movie(frivolous) kind while growing up. Mom and dad always frowned on movie music. Of course she’d love her old Suseela, Savitri and combinations, but movie music of the current generation being played on tape was absolutely banned. So it truly was a surprise (more to them) and even to me that I could mouth lyrics and hum along the song when I really wasn’t supposed to be knowing them in the first place. Especially the hindi or telugu ones, considering tamil was pretty much the only language floating all around us then. I guess, I must owe my taste and memory to all the tea kadais down the walk from home to the bus stop, the isthrikaran‘s little radio downstairs, the night time radio channels that the neighbor would play and I’d listen laying down on the roof under the stars, and ultimately who could forget Oliyum Ozhiyum on Friday evenings?

Coming back to this movie, there are very many scenes that have stayed with me. Kamal’s acting of course was incredible in many places and Radhika (whom I deeply admired) played her role with elegance. I mostly remember the song frames. The fun ‘Suvvi Suvvi‘ , the childish ‘chinnari ponnari‘, the dance-able ‘rama kanavemi ra‘ and the melodious lullaby ‘Lali Lali’. I remember sitting next to the large wall of windows in our Brussels airport apartment (gee, at the aiport indeed!! argh!) with my legs stretched out rocking the son to sleep while the daughter lay beside me, and singing them this song. I’d always mess up and stick the “kodanda ramuniki” well ahead of time! I wasn’t a singer per se, but the kids didn’t mind. Then. Now they just run.

Manasu Palike (manasu mayangum) is and was a favorite. It was downright sexy. With that out of the way, the words carry tenderness, desire, love and playfulness through the tune. This even if there was no visual to prod it along. They just sweet! The whole thing, music, words, actors, visuals. *sigh

Read or sing along if you know telugu (Thanks to a friend who sent it to me even without me asking. yay :)) or just enjoy the video. The tune and visual stay the same no matter the language, so it’s all good. I couldn’t find Tamil lyrics, and am rushing to meet the midnight deadline, so can’t wait anymore. Sorry! 🙂

Enjoy!
