today

The world woke up to history today. The new 44th President of United States of America was elected in an overwhelming majority. A change that the Americans wanted to happen and made it happen. The power of a vote.

You see the man, his smile, the strength in his voice and his opening lines yesterday and one cannot help but feel a warmth growing within, even if you were a staunch Republican.

His speech  with the opening lines “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”

Many immigrants will nod their heads to those lines. USA has indeed been the land of our dreams, in small and many ways. It has been for me.  If we do put our minds, hearts and soul to work, this indeed would be the place where dreams do come true. It is possible.

The man who will take office come Jan 20th 2009 is one who has reached a point in his life despite many odds. If one isn’t inspired by him to channel themsleves forward and carry on the hope to the future, little else would.

McCain’s concession speech was exemplary. My respect for the man rose with every word he spoke, a fantastic, elegant and strong exit.

“In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans, who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president, is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving.”

These are fine orators we witness amongst us.  Leaders of different kinds, but ultimately being able to deliver words in ways that can at once be considered appealing, powerful and assuring.

It is indeed historical times we live in. I look forward to the day when our future, including my grandchildren would interview me and ask me what it was to have lived during these times. For that reason alone I chronicle these pieces, perahps take a printout and save the newspapers, and create a time capsule to be opened many years down the road.

So this lovely day as there are tears of joy and happiness all around, I behaved like a spoilt child shedding tears of a different kind.

Few minutes before I left home, with a myriad things on my mind, I snapped at the husband, yelled at him and slammed the door on my way out. I nearly drove off the road trying to save a squirrel and in the process spilt the can of V8 on my lovely brown shirt. Ultimately I reached work in a blundering wet mess. From tears, from V8 and from the puddle I stepped into at the garage.

Oh well, maybe the rest of the day would be better.

On that note, Go Obama, Go USA. May everyone’s dreams come true.
