my trek

trek

Everything was going wrong since 24 hours before I took the plunge and bought this cycle last Sunday. Everything kept going wrong for a good 24 hours and more after I got this cycle.

Weather, home, emotions, money and more.

It may have been a bad start, but I sure hope and believe that this Hybrid Trek will take me to a happier place in my health and life.

I took it for its first spin yesterday. It was cold, 32 degree weather, with a mix of snow and rain and sharp cold wind. I suited up fine enough, but the face bore the brunt of the cold. I huffed and puffed in the cold, panting through shallow breaths willing for my thighs to spin me forward.

I clocked about 4 minute mile. I have no clue if that is good or bad, but it seemed right enough for the first time I was cycling after 20 years of no cycling. I used to enjoy riding my BSA SLR all the way from my home in Nungambakkam to Good Shepherd at the edge of N high road, College road and Sterling Rd.

I loved Sterling Road back then. It was flanked by enormous green shady trees, wide, and empty. Not anymore of course. I loved zipping down the subway (the low tunnel road under the railway tracks) before Loyola College in the corner and I loved using the momentum to pedal fast uphill. I enjoyed the wind in my face and the freedom of being alone as I day dreamed my way to school. I even gave the occasional roadside romeo a piece of my mind as they tried to push me off the road with their bikes or catcalls.

That was then.

Now, am older with a lot more cellulite, tight muscles, barely there cartilage in my knees, one fresh tear in my left knee and a heavier heart and mind and well, cycling is a lot harder.

I have a goal. I want my Trek to be the source of comfort my blue BSA was to me back then.

2014 – here I come.

Wish me luck?
